This is a 2014 handout from CASEL that highlights six key features of high-quality standards for social and emotional learning (SEL) based on a review of research literature on SEL and learning standards. Briefly, these key features include freestanding and comprehensive standards, integration with academic subject areas, guidance for adult support, guidance for creating positive learning environments, cultural and linguistic appropriateness, and supportive tools for implementation. Numerous links to examples of standards and practices are available for each key feature that is discussed.
